HYGIENE FOR ORTHODONTICS
Dr
Phillip Ajaje and staff are happy to
welcome you to our practice
and to orthodontic treatment. We always
try our best to make your
treatment as pleasant as possible; if
you have any questions, problems,
or complaints, please let us know so
we can work it out with you.
Your new appliance/ braces as you know,
is an integral part of your
treatment, so it is important that you
follow our proper guidelines
for proper care and to ensure quicker
results.
During the course of your orthodontic
treatment, there are some foods which
you must avoid.
DO
NOT EAT SUGERY, STICKY, CHEWY FOOD SUCH
AS –
* Lollies
* Chocolates
* Muesli Bars
* Minties
* Toffees
* Chewing Gum
* Roll Ups
These sticky foods contain too much
sugar and can react with plaque and
cause decay of your teeth as well as
dissolving the cement which holds the
braces onto your teeth.
DO
NOT DRINK SOFT DRINKS SUCH AS –
* Coke
* Pepsi
* Fanta
* Lemonade
* Lift
These drinks contain too much sugar
and are to be AVIODED throughout treatment.
You can however, still consume the ‘diet”
versions of these drinks.
BE AWARE OF HARD, CRUNCHY FOODS SUCH
AS –
* Apples
* Pears
* Carrots
* Celery
* Peanuts
* All crunchy, crisp fruits and Vegetables
These foods should first be cut up into
bite-size pieces and chewed on the back
molar teeth instead of the front incisor
teeth.
BE
AWARE OF HARD ITEMS SUCH AS:
*
Bones (chicken wings, drumsticks
* Corn on the cob
* Don’t chew on pens, pencils, your
fingernails
These
items above are very hard and, if chewed
on, can cause the
Braces to come off.
FIRST AID
*
During the first few days, your teeth
will be a little sensitive when tapped
together, so it is advisable to eat
a soft diet. This may include foods
such as pasta, soups, eggs, yogurt,
etc.
*
If you suffer from discomfort, you mat
need to take some form of pain relief
(Panadol, Dispren, etc.)
*
You may find that when you laugh, talk
and smile, the braces tend to rub on
your lips and cheeks which may cause
ulcers. You are supplied with wax which
is to be placed over the braces to make
a smooth surface for your lips and cheeks.
Make sure the area is completely dry
before applying the wax so that it adheres
properly to the appliance.
*
It is important that you maintain regular
brushing and flossing of your teeth,
if you have difficulty doing so, our
friendly staff can recommend the best
techniques and products for you. In
addition you will need to arrange appointments
for an examination and clean with us
every six (6) months.
REMEMBER:
IF YOU WANT YOUR TREATMENT TO GO SMOOTHLY
AND QUICKLY, YOU WILL NEED TO TAKE THESE
THINGS INTO CONSIDERATION AND YOUR ORTHODONTIC
TREATMENT WILL BE BREAKAGE FREE AND
MORE ENJOYABLE.
